Dr.Disha Madan is working as Lecturer in the PG Department of Studies in
English, Nehru College and PG Center, Hubli (Karnataka). She is having vast
experience of teaching at UG and PG level. She has published research
articles in reputed International journals and co-author of a book ‘The Double
Bind: Women of Color (African American Women Writers)’; and written
epilogue for the translated poems ‘My Fifty-One Poems’ translated from
Hindi poems of Atalbihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India. She has
presented papers at National and International Conferences and chaired the
sessions. She was also a resource person for one of the conferences. She is
associated with a research project of Massey University, New Zealand, 2015 Pro-Bono. She was the
President of International Inner Wheel Club of Hubli Mid-Town Dist. 317 for the year 2015-16. She has
worked for the cause of the poor and needy children and the aged. She has contributed towards
propagating and executing the International Rotary literacy mission of providing elementary education
to the children. By recognizing her contribution in the field of Literature and towards the society,
University of South America conferred honorary D.Litt degree to her.
The study of plethora of humanity stands on the grounds of masculinity and femininity.
Based on this, sex and gender , masculinity and feminity become the part and parcel of
existence. Patriarchy and feminism form the two cornerstones of life. Texts are
articulated on the basis of humanity, but, at times, interpreted on the grounds of gender.
This book throws light on such issues and puts forth the autobiographical texts of a female
and a male , Hurston and Hemingway, in a comparative study, in order to specify the voice
of a human culture rather than a masculine or a feminine culture.
The first chapter, Autobiography : Gender Oriented, defines autobiography and
portrays the roots of autobiography. It reflects the truths of the autobiography. Truth is
knowledge. And, absolute truth is beyond time. Autobiography is a recomposition of life
and a second reading. It is the cave of the past with the search light of memory the creator
tarries all nooks and corners. The author dives deep in the subconscious and unconscious
mind to recollect the fragile emotions while reliving the tender moments of the past.
Past, on the other hand is not only recapitulated, but it reconstructs the Self, in connection
with the present. One relocates oneself from the dislocated Self. Self is a fabrication and
contains a highly complex truth. The image which is in flux and never static, such an
image is captured . There is a pattern hidden behind the wool and there is method in the
madness. This pattern and this method is discovered and universalized by the
Memories of facts keep floating in the mind and they are coated with imagination and
presented forth by the author. Autobiography is a camouflage of fact and fiction. An effort
is made by the autobiographer to impose order to the chaotic life and to impose order,
form and meaning to life. And, a universal psychological reality is reflected.
The pattern of autobiography is a concealed revelation. The experience becomes the vital
part of the author’s essence. Sameness is explored in the midst of difference. The personal
and the collective voice sings with urgency and fire. But, the outflow of emotions is
compiled and balanced beautifully within the annals of the hybrid boundaries.
This chapter analyses the gendered autobiography in a gendered world. Highlighting the
similarities and differences in male/female autobiography in culture, language, and
psyche. For women autobiographers it is more of mirror of unvoiced aspirations and
acknowledgement than grandeur. Patriarchal culture has fictionalized women.
Concealment becomes a strategy born out of fear and dis-ease.
