1.0 TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF SERIES CIRCUIT A series circuit consists of resistance, inductance and capacitor connected in combination. The applied voltage is step voltage. The initial state of inductance and capacitance results in to a circuit with energy storage elements and transient response analysis is required for the circuit. 1.1 Steady State and Transient Response A circuit having constant sources is said to be in steady state if the currents and voltages do not change with time. Thus, circuits with current and voltages having constant amplitude and constant frequency sinusoidal function are also considered to be in a steady state. That means that the amplitude and or frequency of a sinusoidal never changes in a steady state circuit. In a network containing energy storage elements with change in excitation, the currents and voltages change from one state to other state. The behaviour of the voltage or current when it is changed from one state to another is called the ′Transient State′. The time taken for the circuit to change from one steady state to another steady state is called the transient time. The application of KVL and KCL to circuits containing energy storage elements results in differential rather than algebraic equations.
